  5. Destitution in the UK 2023
In the “Destitution in the UK 2023” study by Suzanne Fitzpatrick and colleagues, published in October 2023, the alarming rise of destitution in the UK is spotlighted, with 3.8 million people, including one million children, unable to meet basic needs. Despite 75% of these individuals receiving social security, the benefits are insufficient. The study underscores the inadequacy of ad-hoc government support during the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing cost of living crisis. The report strongly recommends introducing an ‘Essentials Guarantee’ for Universal Credit, broad social security reforms, emergency financial assistance, and inclusive support for all, irrespective of their ‘no recourse to public funds’ status.
