The Exploration of Educational Furniture Procurement – Pilot Study by FIRA International examines how UK schools procure classroom furniture, identifying critical barriers that prevent access to ergonomic, durable, and fit-for-purpose designs. Drawing insights from manufacturers, suppliers, and schools, the study highlights how financial constraints, limited product choice, and a lack of ergonomic awareness often result in outdated and unsuitable furniture for students. It also emphasizes the importance of standards like BS EN 1729 while noting widespread non-compliance driven by cost pressures. This pilot report lays the groundwork for future research aimed at influencing policy changes and improving learning environments to better support student wellbeing and academic success.
