The INWORK Issue Brief No.10: Purchasing Practices and Working Conditions in Global Supply Chains presents results from a global survey conducted by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and Ethical Trading Initiatives. Surveying over 1,400 suppliers across 87 countries, the report uncovers how buyers’ purchasing practices—such as short lead times, late orders, and pressure to reduce costs—directly impact wages, working hours, and job security for workers in supply chains. It highlights systemic issues like the use of temporary labour, excessive overtime, and the lack of meaningful social dialogue, while emphasizing that better purchasing practices and stronger labour rights can significantly improve working conditions. This comprehensive study offers key insights for businesses, policymakers, and advocates working to promote decent work across global supply chains.
