Climate change is already having a profound influence on the weather we are experiencing, says Sarah Sands. Scientists have long avoided connecting any individual event with climate change. Sands says there is no blanket explanation for extreme weather, although human caused global warming is a major underlying factor. There are three common mistakes made by news organisations when reporting extreme weather events: ignoring climate change as a cause of the event, and attributing an event to climate change without providing any evidence that that claim, without providing evidence, is a common mistake.
